Turns out that photographing ruddy ducks in bright sunlight is ruddy difficult. Even when I spot metered on the blue bill and white facial markings, the bird ended up over exposed (blown out!). I ended up shooting 2 stops (or more) underexposed to get the ducks' features. Ended up with water looking black, but at least we can see the features of these characters.
