On the morning of Aug 9, 1877 a battle ensued between U.S. soldiers led by Colonel "Red Nosed" Gibbon and five bands of Nez Perce, who were fleeing to Canada to escape the U.S. policy forcing American Indians onto reservations.
The site of that battle is now a historical park - the Big Hole National Battlefield, memorializing those who died there on that morning. The Big Hole National Battlefield is a unit of the Nez Perce Historical Park, which is comprised of 38 locations throughout Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington that commemorated the events of the Flight of the Nez Perce, as well as their history and culture.
Teepee poles are erected in approximation of where teepees were located on that historic morning.
