I am grateful every day that I am blessed to live here in God's Country and The Last Best Place. It is my pleasure to capture and share landscape photos of Montana.

This gallery includes photos from Glacier National Park. Within the boundary of the Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park, an alpine wonderland of glaciers, glacial carved mountains, glacial lakes, glacial streams, and alpine meadows blanketed with wildflowers and prairie grasses is displayed in all its glory. Landforms unique to landscapes shaped by glaciers include arêtes, cirques, hanging valleys, horns and moraines. Glacier National Park is a hiker's paradise.

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo. However, like other members of the deer family, bull moose grow new velvet-covered antlers each spring, rub the antler off in preparation for the rut (mating season) and shed their antlers. Moose tend to shed their antlers earlier than other members of the deer family, often dropping them in December. No doubt the energy saved by not carrying that massive crown all winter is tremendous.

While moose may not be any more aggressive than other members of the deer family, of which all females will vigorously fight to defend their young, and of which the males are dangerous if approached too closely during the rut, moose are often considered to be more dangerous, likely because their sheer size makes them more intimidating and perhaps also more likely to cause serious injury.

All photos in this gallery depict wild & free moose (or elk, if you are European).

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo. The species is comprised of three subspecies: Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep and Desert Bighorn Sheep. The Bighorn Sheep of Big Sky Country are Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. Dall Sheep, found in Alaska, are considered a separate species.

Ewes, females of the species, bear the appearance of wise and crafty individuals -- an appearance that suits their behavior.

Lambs, the young of the species, are exceedingly cute little fellows.

The appearance of the adult males of the species is so dramatic and imposing that their image has been adopted by Dodge to invoke the impression toughness. The large curving horns on the sides of a ram's head, which grow throughout the ram's life, can weigh as much as 30 pounds!

During the fall rut (mating season) males engage in combat to establish breeding rights. In combat, the rams will run at each other at high speeds, up to 20 miles per hour, and ram their heads together. It is not uncommon to see a ram with horns damaged by these vioent contests. These dramatic battles can last for hours. Having won breeding rights, the dominant male then puts on a show of playing hard to get -- running from a female that chases him before mating with her. Sometimes he'll kick a female to prompt this game of chase. As violent as the rut combat is, during winter and spring, rams get along quite well. During those seasons, it is not uncommon to see a bachelor herd comprised of rams of varying age and size.

Bighorn Sheep are exceedingly agile. They can walk on the slopes of canyon walls or loose slopes as casually as you and I can walk on a sidewalk. This ability allows them to elude predators. In fact, ewes deliver and hide their lambs on the steep loose walls of cliffs or canyons to keep them safe from predators. Just days old, lambs can negotiate this tricky terrain just like they were born for it -- which, in fact, they were!

Among the images featured in this gallery are photos of bighorn rams, photos of bighorn ewes and photos of bighorn lambs.

All photos in this gallery depict wild & Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo.

Elk Photos

Elk - Majestic icons of Big Sky Country Elk, sometimes called wapiti, are the second largest member of the deer family.

The largest bull elk sport massive antlers that are shed and grown anew each spring -- a cycle driven by testosterone levels. New antlers begin to grow each spring as increasing levels in daylight trigger increasing levels of testosterone. Antlers are the fastest growing bones in nature. They can grow as much as one inch in a single day! While antlers are growing they are covered with velvet which helps protect the still-fragile growing antlers and carries blood to this growing bone tissue. The growth of antlers ceases in August and bull elk rub off the velvet covering their antlers in preparation for the rut (mating season).

The rut is triggered by photoperiod -- that is the amount of time an animal (or plant) is exposed to sunlight in a 24 hour period. This is true for all members of the deer family. It all has to do with sunlight affecting melatonin, testosterone, etc.

Cloud cover affects the amount of sunlight to which the elk are exposed. Hence, different populations that experience different amounts of sunlight, even at the same latitude, due to regional variations in cloud cover, can have the rut peak at different times.

Following the rut, around October, testosterone levels begin to drop. When testosterone levels reach their lowest point (in early spring), the antlers drop off. The pedicles, the point on the skull from which antlers grow, bleed a bit then heal. Increasing daylight again triggers testosterone levels to climb and the antler cycle continues.

The mating season of elk is referred to as the rut. During the rut, bull elk battle to assemble and protect a harem of cow elk. During the rut, Big Sky Country rings with the bugles of rutting elk. Cow elk remain in estrus for only a couple days. Bull elk monitor the status of the cows in their harem very carefully.

The gestational period of elk is eight and a half months, with the most dramatic fetal development of the calf occurring over the last six weeks of gestation. Cow elk deliver their calves from mid-May through July with variations depending on location. Typical regional peak food availability is the determining factor in the variation of regional differences in calf delivery. Prior to delivery, a cow elk leaves the herd and delivers her calf in seclusion. The cow maintains the secrecy of her vulnerable hidden calf by keeping the area around her calf clean and free of odorous material (placenta, feces) by eating it. So as not to attract predators with her own odor, she stays away from her calf, visiting it only to nurse until the calf has grown stronger. Despite the best efforts of their mothers, elk calves remain very vulnerable to predators including bears, wolves and coyotes.

I hope you enjoy these photos of elk. Among the photos of elk included here are: bull elk in velvet, bull elk in rut, bull elk sparring, bull elk with their harem of cows, cow elk, and elk calves.

Many of these photos were taken in Yellowstone National Park and many others were taken in the National Bison Range.

All photos in this gallery depict wild & free elk (or wapiti, if you prefer).

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo. Many call them buffalo, technically they are American Bison. To the Lakota Sioux, they are tatanka. The Blackfeet call them iinii, the Chippewa Cree call them iniwa. To the Crow, they are known as Bi'Shee. Among the Gros Ventre, the bulls are eneečee and the cows are byiih. Call them what you will, Big Sky Country would seem vacant without them.

All photos in this gallery depict wild & free bison (or whatever you want to call them).

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo. While viewing the photo, mousing over the left edge of the photo will present additional options. To see a photo even larger, and with "the lights dimmed," click on it again. While the "lights are dimmed," you can advance to the next photo by using the page advance button on the far right side of the screen or go back to a previous photo by using the page back button on the far left. To exit the "dimmed lights" mode, click the gray X in the upper right corner.

All of the photos displayed in this gallery are available for purchase. The the billies (males) and the nannies (females) sport black horns, a white beard (though the billies do have longer horns and beards) and wear lovely white double-layer wool coats, shedding the outer coat for the warmer days of summer. Nannies can have the appearance of being run ragged by their kids (young mountain goats) in the spring, as they shed their outer coat more slowly than their male counterparts.

Mountain goats kids are born in spring (May-June) after a six month gestation period. Nannies deliver their kids on an isolated ledge. Within hours of birth kids are trying out their spreadable cloven hooves on the steep cliff-sides and ledges of their range and practicing the agility that allows them to elude predators.

All photos in this gallery depict wild & free mountain goats.

If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo.
