Within the boundary of the Waterton/Glacier International Peace Park, an alpine wonderland of glaciers, glacial carved mountains, glacial lakes, glacial streams, and alpine meadows blanketed with wildflowers and prairie grasses is displayed in all its glory. Landforms unique to landscapes shaped by glaciers include arêtes, cirques, hanging valleys, horns and moraines. Glacier National Park is a hiker's paradise.<br/> <br/>If you want to see an individual photo larger, click on the thumbnail for that photo. While viewing the photo, mousing over the left edge of the photo will present additional options. To see a photo even larger, and with "the lights dimmed," click on it again. Running Eagle Fall bears the name of a legendary historic (by which I mean to communicate that she was a real historical person, not a person of myth) Blackfeet woman. Running Eagle was a rare female warrior chief who used this site for her vision quests.

The waterfall, located in the Two Medicine area of Glacier National Park, is a "trick" fall. In the spring, during high runoff, the water falls over the upper lip and the fall looks like a fairly typical waterfall. However, as the snowmelt slows with summer, the stream stops flowing over the upper lip of the fall and instead only pours out from the hole in the rock wall.

]]>This area is sacred to the Blackfeet (Southern Piegan) people.

Running Eagle Fall bears the name of a legendary historic (by which I mean to communicate that she was a real historical person, not a person of myth) Blackfeet woman. Running Eagle was a rare female warrior chief who used this site for her vision quests.

The waterfall, located in the Two Medicine area of Glacier National Park, is a "trick" fall. ]]>When a visitor walks just a few feet away from the road on the Trail of the Cedars in Glacier National Park, the visitor is transported to a different world. The visitor is transported to a world of old growth cedar and hemlock, moss and ferns, like one would expect in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. Sound is muffled by the dense growth. The sound of the road disappears. Serenity reigns.

I always enjoy the Trail of the Cedars, but on the occasion of this photo I found it especially delightful. A light mist was falling, ferns hanging on the boulders along the boardwalk were bedecked in diamond rain drops, varied thrushes were calling, and Avalanche Creek was roaring.

Running Eagle Fall bears the name of a legendary historic (by which I mean to communicate that she was a real historical person, not a person of myth) Blackfeet woman. Running Eagle was a rare female warrior chief who used this site for her vision quests.

The waterfall, located in the Two Medicine area of Glacier National Park, is a "trick" fall. In the spring, during high runoff, the water falls over the upper lip and the fall looks like a fairly typical waterfall. However, as the snowmelt slows with summer, the stream stops flowing over the upper lip of the fall and instead only pours out from the hole in the rock wall.

Right now they have a fresh cloak of new snow on their shoulders. This photo was taken from the Red Sleep Mountain Drive at the National Bison Range. I always enjoy how the farm fields in the valley seem to make a patchwork quilt.
