Bison, buffalo,
tatanka,
iiníí,
iniwa, Bi'Shee,
eneečee, bozheena... ...Iconic
symbol of the Great Plains and Big Sky Country
The peoples of Big Sky Country
have many names for the great, humped grazer of the plains... Many
call them buffalo, technically they are American Bison. To the Salish,
the bulls are and
the cows are called--
collectively,
they are
.To the Lakota Sioux, they are
tatanka. The Blackfeet call them
iinii, the Chippewa Cree call
them iniwa. To the
Crow, they are known as Bi'Shee.
Among the Gros Ventre, the bulls are eneečee
and the
cows are byiih.
Call them what you will, Big
Sky Country would seem vacant without them. Many of these bison photographs were taken
at
The National Bison Range
while others were taken in
Yellowstone National Park.

In my search for American Indian words for "buffalo,"
I learned that there are only 57 fluent Salish speakers -- and the average
age of that very small group is 70 years old! As such, Salish as a
living language is in peril. The
Salish Language Revitalization Institute has the mission of researching,
promoting and preserving the Salish language. Languages are a cultural
treasure, the preservation of which benefit all of humanity. I
recommend a visit to their
website. Should you be inclined to support their efforts, there is
a PayPal donation option.
